(October 14, 2003) Dalton, GA -The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) announces
the release of a new version of the Appearance Change Reference Scales. This
new series offers laboratory professionals and carpet inspectors appearance
change reference scales that are more representative of the range of carpets
currently in the market. The scales cover six types of carpet: saxony cut-pile,
berber loop, commercial loop (low profile), cut-pile commercial plush, cut-pile
shag, and tip-sheared (with a pattern). The appearance change in carpet is graded
on a 5.0 to 1.0 scale, with 5.0 being the lowest degree of surface change and
1.0 the highest degree of surface change.
This new version of the Appearance Change Reference Scales was developed by
the Carpet and Rug Institutes Performance Standards Committee. This committee,
which is comprised of carpet industry laboratory and testing experts, has spent
the last year fine-tuning the newest version of the scales.
In addition to the release of the new series, CRI has revised and posted on
the CRI website, the test
method CRI TM-101 covering the use of the scales. CRI is working with the
American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Committee D13.21 for the adoption
of TM-101 as a standardized test practice for the use of the CRI Appearance
Change Reference Scales.
